Researchers at the biomedical company Genomas are working on a test that would use patients’ DNA to predict who will have adverse side effects to statins, and help doctors better prescribe the cholesterol-lowering medications.

Statins such as Lipitor (atorvastatin) are among the most prescribed drugs in the world today and are considered highly effective in lowering a patient’s risk of heart attack. But many patients experience side effects, most commonly muscle pain.
