We’ll never really know just when Frances Paul first decided that Upland needed an up-to-date hospital. We do know doctors at the city’s tiny hospital couldn’t save the life of the supervisor of her family’s groves in about 1908 after he was run over by a team of horses spooked by an eclipse, according to family history. And there was the fact that both her grandchildren were born in Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles because their parents were unwilling to go to Upland’s facility.
