Erwin Perez developed a hernia five years ago in his native Guatemala, but the 23-year-old didn’t tell his family because they didn’t have the money to pay for a doctor. After moving to Oakland in 2009, he visited the Order of Malta Oakland clinic, where he was referred to Operation Access, which provides free surgeries for low-income residents with no insurance.
