Explaining South County’s autism ‘cluster’

When UC Davis released a study Wednesday mapping out 10 distinct areas around the state where autism is particularly prevalent, an Orange County advocacy group shrugged. It was hoping for some evidence linking autism spectrum disorders to some kind of environmental factor, like pollution, and none was forthcoming. Instead, the study found that parents in the 10 “clusters” — one in South County, five others elsewhere in Southern California, two in the Bay Area and two in the Central Valley – tended to have higher education levels.
