Doctors, Insurers Fear a Hospital Power Grab Under Healthcare Reform

It’s not often that doctors and insurance companies agree on anything. But the American Medical Association (AMA) and America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) both recently warned the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that the government’s approach to accountable care organizations (ACOs) risks giving hospital systems too much power.

The FTC, which is pondering how to remove regulatory obstacles to ACOs, could prevent hospitals from aggrandizing their market clout. What the agencies decide, however, will affect doctors and insurers in different ways.
