Doctor ‘report cards’ not last word on performance

Public information about U.S. doctors’ education, certification and malpractice claims may not be enough to help patients determine whether a physician provides high-quality care, a new study suggests. “To improve the quality of care received by their beneficiaries, some health plans use physician report cards and tiered physician networks to steer their members towards physicians who provide high-quality care. However, most patients do not have access to physician quality measures,” wrote Rachel O. Reid, of the University of Pittsburgh and colleagues.
