Doctor explores question of ‘autism epidemic’

Before 1986, autism was diagnosed for 1 in 10,000 children. Today, depending on which statistics are used, it is 1 in 91 to 1 in 110 children nationwide and 1 in 67 in California. The numbers continue to rise on a worldwide basis.

What could possibly cause this incredible rise of autism spectrum disorders? The answer is genetic, epigenetic and environmental forces. Unfortunately, there is not one “smoking gun” when it comes to autism.
