Docs at odds over safety of weight-loss pill

Nothing like a good old-fashioned medical-journal cage match to liven up the day. The top editors of the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday said the weight-loss drug sibutramine, sold under the brand name Meridia, should be pulled from the market because a study shows it causes too many heart attacks and strokes. But the authors of the NEJM study — three of whom are on the payroll of the company that makes Meridia and commission the study — say it can help people who don’t already have heart problems.
