Diabetes takes toll on health costs

Complications from diabetes, which affects more than 20 million Californians, account for one-fifth of the cost of preventable hospitalizations. And the obesity-related disease is on the rise, increasing by almost 15 percent from 2000 to 2004 and taking a greater toll on older people in Sonoma County and across the state, according to a report by California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
