Despite Gender-Rating Ban, Some Calif. Insurers Continue Practice, Columnist Writes

A new California law requires individual health insurance policies to be sold on a “gender-neutral” basis, but several companies “appear to be playing fast and loose with ending what regulators call a discriminatory practice,” Los Angeles Times columnist David Lazarus writes.

Although state officials say the intent of the law was to prohibit gender-based pricing beginning Jan. 1, only Blue Shield of California has complied, according to Lazarus.
