Department of Insurance begins reviewing rate filings

Rate filings for the state’s largest health insurers will undergo the same outside scrutiny as the proposed rate increases recently abandoned by Anthem Blue Cross. In that case, a state-hired actuary found flaws in the company’s calculations that led to increases of up to 39 percent for some of its customers.

The Department of Insurance announced today that it has begun reviewing rate filings submitted by Aetna and Blue Shield and will also analyze any future filings by Health Net and Blue Cross. The four companies account for 90 percent of the individual policy market.
