A Day of Reckoning for Insurers

The nation’s health insurers are beginning to feel the impact of the new federal health care law, a sweeping overhaul of their business that marked its six-month anniversary on Thursday. They say they are scrambling to comply with the first major wave of new rules, which include starting to cover all children, even the seriously ill, and to provide free preventive care.

While the most far-reaching changes do not take place until 2014, health plans must still cope with new regulations and much heavier oversight in the coming weeks and months.
