Consumer group cites rise in insurer profits

The five largest for-profit health insurers reported combined net income of $3.2 billion in the first quarter of this year, up 31% over the same period in 2009, according to a new report by Health Care for America Now, a consumer advocacy group. In releasing the report, the group held a call with reporters and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), who are sponsoring a bill that aims to tamp down health insurance rate increases.
