Children’s Hospital Oakland began the cutbacks and restructuring it warned about by laying off 17 employees Tuesday, mostly in communications and fundraising positions. The job cuts were the initial steps of a plan to reduce a projected loss of $26 million. “We are making these changes now to ensure we are fiscally sound and able to carry out our mission to provide the highest quality pediatric care to all children, now and in the future,” Dr. Bertram Lubin, president and chief executive of the hospital, said in a statement.
