The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the creation of a new voluntary national accreditation program open to public health departments for states, local municipalities and tribal nations.

The new program was developed in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and will be administered through the not-for-profit Public Health Accreditation Board.

A news release on the program said inspectors will examine 10 “essential areas of public health activities” and ensure that accredited departments are committed to constant improvement.
