Calif. fines 12 hospitals for endangering patients
San Francisco Chronicle

A dozen California hospitals were fined by state regulators for mistakes that killed three patients or threatened the health of others, state regulators announced Thursday.

The errors occurred between 2008 and 2010 and mainly involved medication mistakes or leaving surgical tools inside patients after operations.

The California Department of Public Health issued a total of $650,000 in fines to the hospitals and worked with them to change procedures to prevent recurrences, said Pam Dickfoss, acting deputy director of the department’s Center for Health Care Quality.
