CAD use tied to Medicare reimbursement policy, study says

A new Archives of Internal Medicine study has found that use of computer-aided detection, or CAD, tools in reading mammography images increased substantially over the past decade even though research has not shown that the technology improves accurate detection of early breast cancer. The increased use of CAD with mammography screenings can be directly linked to a 2001 congressional mandate that Medicare reimburse for CAD services, said the study’s authors.
