Blue Shield to delay Calif. health rate hikes

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones had asked for the delay last month, citing some instances in which consumers would see their health insurance rates skyrocket by up to 59 percent.

Blue Shield said the planned increases reflect a two-year cumulative average increase of about 30 percent.

The insurer said it would delay the price hikes “to remove any doubt that the rates we have submitted are necessary to pay the medical expenses of our individual members and meet the new medical loss ratio standard.”
