AHA urges court to kill whistle-blower ruling
Modern Healthcare

As the number of whistle-blower lawsuits filed against healthcare providers in the U.S. has exploded in the past 20 years, so has the cottage industry of lawyers “trolling” for clients to file less-than-meritorious claims, the American Hospital Association says. Now a recent decision out of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York could give those lawyers far more material with which to file lawsuits, according to the AHA. The Chicago-based trade association for hospitals has filed a friend-of-the-court brief (PDF) with the U.S. Supreme Court asking the justices to strike down the ruling, which it says would expand the reach of lawsuits filed under the False Claims Act.
