The ABCs of ACOs

With the federal government’s regulations as yet unreleased and oceans of hype surrounding them, it’s not clear what form Accountable Care Organizations will take — or what impact they’ll have. But they’re garnering a lot of attention. What ACOs are: A so-called “shared savings program” under last year’s Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act. It calls for the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to promote cost sharing involving a designated population of Medicare beneficiaries with a group of providers who form a provider group that is accountable for the quality and cost of care delivered to that population.
