184,000 uninsured in county last year

San Joaquin County’s number of residents without health insurance has soared by more than 50,000 in the recession years of 2007 to 2009, according to a recent fact sheet from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.

The report estimates that 28.2 percent of the county’s population younger than the Medicare-eligibility age of 65 were uninsured at some point during 2009. That’s almost 184,000 people. In 2007, the UCLA researchers put their estimates of the uninsured at 130,000 people, or 21.8 percent.
