Yelp to Display Maternity Measures for California Hospitals

Beginning today, social media and business review site Yelp, in partnership with the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) and, will display maternity measures on nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) cesarean delivery, vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC), breastfeeding and episiotomies for all California birthing hospitals.

These maternity measures are based on hospitals’ data submissions to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and the California Department of Public Health from July 2015-June 2016. The measures also will be updated for release on in fall 2017.

The Hospital Quality Institute’s (HQI) ongoing work, in partnership with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) and CHCF, includes:

  • The Promoting Optimal NTSV Delivery Rates (PONDR) grant, a two-part study to understand successful birthing practices in California’s small and rural  hospitals, and a deep dive of perinatal event data from CHPSO Patient Safety Organization’s database
  • Encouraging California birthing hospitals to participate in CMQCC’s activities, including the Maternal Data Center
  • The Smart Care California Hospital Honor Roll, under which hospitals achieving the national Healthy People 2020 goal of a NTSV rate 23.9 percent or lower were publicly recognized by California Health & Human Services Secretary Diana Dooley in October 2016, with plans for continued recognition in late 2017
  • Public reporting on, including NTSV, VBAC, episiotomy and breastfeeding metrics

HQI appreciates the hospitals and their staffs that are working hard to help mothers and babies achieve the best outcomes. For more information and with questions, contact Claire Manneh, CHPSO director of programs, at or (916) 552-7683.
