Veterans Choice Contract Revised to Improve Timeliness of Payment to Providers

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that it is “eliminating administrative burdens placed on VA community providers” and has outlined several steps to improving timely provider payment — including moving to a more automated payment process. Previously, payments to Veterans Choice providers were not allowed until a copy of the veteran’s medical record was submitted. Now, community providers under the Choice program will no longer be required to submit medical records prior to receiving payment. VA will continue to require that pertinent medical information be returned to ensure continuity of care but will no longer tie that requirement to provider payment, and has modified the Choice Program contract accordingly. Additionally, VA is working toward a single community care program that is easily understood, simply administered and meets the needs of its community.
