U.S. Senate Finance Committee Holds Hearing on Dual Eligibles

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee held a hearing today examining progress toward improving care for patients dually eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Melanie Bella, director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office, testified on the progress of the state-run financial alignment demonstrations, such as the California Coordinated Care Initiative. Bella provided updates for demonstrations in Massachusetts and Washington, which are the first states to be approved under the capitated payment and managed-fee-for-service models, respectively. Bella also stressed CMS’s commitment to transparency as it works to approve agreements with 23 other states, including California. In addition to Bella, state health officials from Arizona, Washington and Ohio testified.
