Updated CHA Report Shows Inpatient Psychiatric Beds Declining in California

CHA has updated its ongoing report on the decline of California’s psychiatric inpatient care facilities and beds. Using the most recent financial data from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, the report shows that the number of facilities statewide has been steadily declining, with 44 fewer than it had in 1995 – representing a 24 percent drop. The report also shows a decrease in the number of beds, with 32 percent fewer than in 1995.  During the same time period, California’s population has increased by more than 5 million people.
