UCSF Releases Latest Report on Community Paramedicine Project Outcomes

A new report from the University of California San Francisco evaluates the state’s Community Paramedicine Pilot Program, covering the period from the launch of each of the 14 projects through June 30, 2017. The evaluators conclude that Californians benefit from these innovative models of health care, which leverage an existing workforce that operates at all times under medical control — either directly or by protocols developed by physicians experienced in emergency care. According to the report, the projects have improved coordination among medical, behavioral health and social services providers; reduced preventable ambulance transports, emergency department visits and hospital readmissions; and have not resulted in any adverse outcomes for patients.
