UCSF to Provide Access to Medical Prices and Quality Health Care to California Consumers

The California Department of Insurance (DOI) announced today an agreement with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to create a health care pricing and quality transparency project, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The project was created to provide meaningful information to consumers about the price and quality of health care services before they receive care. The information is intended to improve competition, result in lower medical costs and help consumers make more informed decisions about their care.

Researchers will collect and analyze data to develop price and quality information based on common medical procedures, as well as collect average prices for geographic regions. UCSF will also gather information from various stakeholders to cover various audiences including businesses, health insurers and health care providers. More information is available in the DOI press release about the project.
