Today is National Rural Health Day

Today marks National Rural Health Day, a recognition of the unique characteristics and needs of America’s rural communities. Over 60 million people live in rural communities across the U.S., including 5 million in California — 13 percent of the state’s population. In addition to statewide challenges stemming from the needs of an aging population and larger percentages of un- and under-insured patients, rural health care providers also face unique challenges related to accessibility and a lack of workforce in remote areas. National Rural Health Day, sponsored by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health, seeks to showcase rural providers’ efforts to address these challenges.
