Task Force Makes Recommendations for Depression Screenings

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has released recommendations on depression screening for adults. The task force recommends screening for depression in the general adult population, including pregnant and postpartum women, as well as implementing screenings with adequate systems in place to ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and appropriate follow up. The new recommendations have been classified as grade B, so private insurers and Medicare will need to cover screenings without cost-sharing beginning no later than January 2017. States can receive a one percentage point increase in their federal Medicaid match rate for preventive services if they cover all recommended adult preventive services without cost-sharing.
