Task Force Engages Physicians to Curb Opioid Abuse
Includes dozens of physician organizations and state medical societies nationwide

The American Medical Association (AMA) has announced the formation of a task force committed to combating opioid abuse nationwide. The AMA Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse will initially focus on urging physicians to register for and use state-based prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) as part of the decision-making process when considering treatment options. According to the AMA, PDMPs that are fully funded, contain relevant information and are available at the point of care have been shown to effectively help physicians identify patients who may be misusing opioids. Among the program’s new resources for physicians is a web page offering information on PDMPs and their effectiveness.
