Supreme Court Upholds Individual Mandate

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), upholding the individual mandate and related provisions. The court also ruled that the federal government cannot withhold federal Medicaid funding to states that do not expand their Medicaid programs. CHA does not anticipate this ruling will have a significant impact in California as the state is expected to comply with the Medicaid-expansion provisions, extending coverage to an estimated 2 million low-income uninsured Californians.

CHA is pleased by the court’s decision and has long supported the goal of expanding coverage to the uninsured. Attached are a CHA member memorandum and the Supreme Court’s decision.
