Supreme Court Hears Arguments on Medicaid Expansion

Yesterday afternoon, the U.S. Supreme Court focused on Medicaid expansion, the final issue being challenged under the Affordable Care Act. The legal question under review is how much power Congress has over states under the Constitution’s Spending Clause. The states arguing against this provision believe that even though the federal government will pay 100 percent of the new cost of Medicaid expansion, states will be vulnerable to changes in federal funding during the first years of expansion. Audio and transcripts of oral arguments are available at www.supremecourt.gov.
