Simpson, Bowles Release Updated Deficit Reduction Plan

Former Sen. Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles have released an updated version of their bipartisan deficit reduction plan to encourage Congress to avert automatic spending cuts known as sequestration, set to take effect Feb. 27. The updated “Simpson-Bowles plan” was released as a framework for a compromise between Democrats and Republicans that would replace the $2.7 trillion deficit reduction achieved by the sequester, as well as an additional $2.4 trillion. While proposing only a broad outline, the plan includes more health care provider cuts than the sequester to reform Medicare and reduce the government’s health care costs. The plan is expected to receive a great deal of attention in Washington, D.C., as the deadline to avert sequestration rapidly approaches. For an overview of the plan, visit
