Senate Finance Committee Examines Effect of Price Transparency on Health Care Costs

The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing today regarding health care costs and hospital pricing. Witnesses included Steven Brill, contributing editor for TIME Magazine and author of the article “Bitter Pill;” Dr. Suzanne Delbanco, executive director, Catalyst for Payment Reform; Dr. Paul Ginsburg, president, Center for Studying Health System Change; and Dr. Giovanni Colella, CEO and co-founder, Castlight Health. The witnesses testified on the effects price transparency and quality improvement may have on health care costs. While a number of witnesses view price transparency as a key factor in reducing health care costs, Dr. Ginsburg provided evidence that publishing negotiated rates may have the opposite effect and raise prices for consumers while doing little to reduce the costs of providing health care.
