Report Identifies Barriers to Widespread Adoption of Telehealth Services

A report released this week by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation identifies a number of federal and state regulatory barriers that currently limit the deployment and adoption of telemedicine. Identifying barriers in standards of care, state licensing requirements, and insurance coverage and compatibility, the report recommends the federal government adopt a standard definition for telehealth and establish a single, national license for telehealth providers. It also recommends technology- and location-neutral insurance payment policies, interoperability among state prescription drug monitoring programs and increased investment in telehealth research.
