Report Examines Improving Cybersecurity in Health Care

The Health Care Industry Cybersecurity Task Force, created by the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015, has released a report to Congress outlining recommendations to improve cybersecurity for the health care industry. Over the past year, the task force gathered input from experts inside and outside the health care industry, as well as the general public, to develop the following six key recommendations:

  • Define and streamline leadership, governance and expectations for health care industry cybersecurity.
  • Increase the security and resilience of medical devices and health IT.
  • Develop the health care workforce capacity necessary to prioritize and ensure cybersecurity awareness and technical capabilities.
  • Increase health industry readiness through improved cybersecurity awareness and education.
  • Identify mechanisms to protect research and development efforts and intellectual property from attacks or exposure.
  • Improve information sharing of industry threats, risks and mitigations.

The Health Care and Public Health Sector’s Cybersecurity Working Group will review the recommendations and develop an action plan for implementation. To join the working group, please contact cip@hhs.gov
