Recommendations Issued for Efforts to Expand Medication-Assisted Treatment

The Government Accountability Office has released a report on the Department of Health and Human Services’ recent efforts to expand access to medication-assisted treatment to reduce opioid misuse and associated deaths. The study reviewed five different initiatives implemented since 2015, including grant programs that expand access to medication-assisted treatment in various settings – including rural areas – and regulations that expand the use of buprenorphine. The report recommends that the department establish performance targets for the programs going forward, as well as timeframes for evaluating the outcomes.
