President Signs Bill Addressing Drug Shortages

The President has signed into law the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety and Innovation Act, which contains CHA-supported language to mitigate current drug shortages. The new law will require drug-makers to report production interruptions and discontinuations to the FDA in advance; speed the FDA approval process for drugs in short supply; and improve communication among suppliers, providers and patients regarding the reasons for and length of potential drug shortages.

The legislation also creates a user fee program that will help speed FDA approval of generic drugs, and allows hospitals within health systems to conserve their inventory by sharing repackaged drugs.
