President Commits to Fighting Opioid Abuse

Last week, President Obama announced that federal employees, contractors and clinical trainees and clinical residents who prescribe controlled substances will now be required to complete training, within 18 months, on the appropriate prescribing of opioid medications, and to complete a refresher course every three years. The announcement was made in recognition of what the President called “an epidemic” of prescription pain medication and heroin-related deaths nationwide. In addition, the President directed federal agencies that provide health care services or benefits to submit a plan to address any challenges they face in accessing medication-assisted treatment for opioid use, and any standard practices that are inconsistent with reducing overdoses.
