President Announces Executive Orders to Improve Veterans’ Access to Mental Health Care

President Obama has issued 19 new executive actions in an effort to improve veterans’ access to mental health care and strengthen the transition between the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) in getting care for those leaving military service. He also outlined steps to improve treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, raise awareness about mental health and enrich community resources for service members, veterans and their families. The new actions build upon those already taken in response to the President’s 2012 Executive Order on veterans’ mental health and “represent the latest in the DoD’s and VA’s commitment to ensure the Administration is working to fulfill its promises.” For a complete list of the executive actions, view the White House fact sheet.
