Partnership Announced to Improve Dementia Care

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced the Partnership to Improve Dementia Care, which will place an emphasis on reducing antipsychotic medications for nursing home patients by 15 percent by the end of 2012. Partners in the initiative will include federal and state entities, nursing homes and other providers, and advocacy and caregiver groups. CMS will provide enhanced training that focuses on patient-centered care, abuse prevention and high-quality resident care. CMS will emphasize non-pharmacological alternatives, such as implementing consistent staff assignments, increasing exercise or time outdoors, monitoring and managing acute and chronic pain, and planning individualized activities. Data on each nursing home’s antipsychotic drug use will be available on the Nursing Home Compare website beginning in July.
