Overhaul of Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual Nears Completion

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has approved the final diagnostic criteria for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) — a  guidebook used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose and classify mental disorders. The new diagnostic criteria can be used once DSM-5 is published in spring 2013. The manual’s revision process has spanned more than a decade and included contributions from more than 1,500 experts in psychiatry, psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing, pediatrics, neurology and other related fields from 39 countries. For more information, visit the DSM-5 website at www.DSM5.org.
