OHMA Appellant Forum Provides Update on Medicare Appeals

The Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (OMHA) held a third Medicare appellant forum last week, providing an update on the status of Medicare appeals at all levels, including the backlog of appeals at the administrative law judge level. OMHA also provided an update on initiatives meant to reduce the backlog, including settlement conference facilitation and a statistical sampling pilot.

A representative from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) spoke at the forum about future changes intended to reduce provider burden and minimize appeals. CMS indicated that some of these changes may be effective as early as Aug. 1. CHA will continue to inform members of any policy updates through CHA News as more information is available. OMHA continues to accept questions about the appeals process at OSOMHAAppellantForum@hhs.gov.
