New ‘Strong Start’ Resources Available

As part of the Strong Start initiative, launched in February, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has developed a “toolkit” providing action-oriented resources for health care providers and community-based organizations to help expectant mothers get safe, evidence-based care, and improve their newborns’ chances for good physical and developmental health. The toolkit allows health care providers to access patient-safety checklists, participate in quality-improvement initiatives, and share information with expectant mothers and families. Strong Start builds on the work of the Partnership for Patients, testing ways to speed the adoption of best practices and supporting providers in reducing early elective deliveries. The initiative also tests the effectiveness of enhanced prenatal care to reduce preterm births for women covered by Medicaid.
