New Screening Tool Will Help EDs Identify Suicidal Teens

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a program to develop an emergency department screening tool that helps identify teen patients at risk of suicide. The program — Emergency Department Screen for Teens at Risk for Suicide (ED-STARS) — will be deployed in 14 emergency departments for testing and review. NIH has chosen to test ED-STARS with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network and Whiteriver PHS Indian Hospital because of their diverse patient populations, including a Native American population who is statistically at higher risk for suicide. NIH intends for ED-STARS to offer a patient-friendly tool that is adaptable and case sensitive. For more information, visit the NIH website.
