New Reports Examine Parity Implementation Nationally and Statewide

New reports on mental health coverage and parity implementation address the issue from both a national and statewide perspective. The attached fact sheet from the Parity Implementation Coalition offers information about California’s parity implementation efforts as part of a series exploring the state’s implementation of The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) and parity in the Affordable Care Act. Also attached is the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Improving Health Coverage for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Patients: Including Compliance with the Federal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity Provisions. According to the DOL, some of the most common types of violations include imposing broad preauthorization requirements only on mental health or substance use disorder benefits; imposing more restrictive visit limits on mental health/substance use disorder benefits; and requiring written treatment plans to access care, only for mental health services.
