New CMS Database Contains Complaint Information about Hospitals

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released information about thousands of federally authorized hospital complaint investigations – known as “2567″ reports – through a new, publicly accessible database. The searchable national database was created at the request of the Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ); previously, information about the 2567 violations was available from CMS only by request through the Freedom of Information Act. The released data does not include investigations involving psychiatric hospitals or long-term care facilities, nor does it include hospitals’ plans of correction regarding violations.

The AHCJ has posted the searchable data on its own website at Survey reports unrelated to a complaint investigation are not included in the data release, but the AHCJ has requested them and has sent a letter to the Joint Commission asking it to release accreditation survey reports.
