New Bill Seeks to Remove 96-Hour Certification Requirement for CAHs

The Critical Access Hospital Relief Act (H.R. 169) was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this week, a bill that would remove the 96-hour physician certification requirement as a condition of payment for critical access hospitals (CAHs). While removing the requirement for a physician to state the patient will be discharged or transferred in less than 96 hours in order for the CAH to be paid, the legislation would not remove the requirement that CAHs maintain an average annual length of stay of 96 hours, nor affect other certification requirements for hospitals.
