National Survey Released on Drug and Alcohol Use

The use of illicit drugs among Americans ages 12 and older has remained stable over the past year, while binge drinking among younger people has continued to decline, according to the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) recently released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. NSDUH shows that 22.5 million Americans ages 12 or older were current illicit drug users (8.7 percent in 2011 vs. 8.9 percent in 2010). NSDUH also found that marijuana use is on the rise, with 7 percent of the population now describing themselves as current users. For more information, see attached NSDUH survey.
