Mental Health, Substance Use Disorder Parity Action Plan Released

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity Action Plan, as required by the 21st Century Cures Act. The plan includes recent and planned actions from HHS, the Department of Labor and the Department of the Treasury related to ongoing implementation of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. The act applies to employment–based large group health plans and health insurance issuers choosing to provide mental health and substance use disorder coverage, and requires that these benefits not carry more restrictive limitations than the limitations on medical and surgical benefits. According to HHS, the plan will help ensure beneficiaries can access mental health and substance use disorder treatment. HHS also recently updated its online portal to help individuals who have questions or are having trouble accessing treatment.
